Natural Hair | DIY Deep Conditioner Recipes You Must Try

It’s always a good time for a deep condition…

Natural hair thrives in moist, supple environments and deep conditioning treatments provide the moisture that helps your hair be as healthy as possible.

Not sure where to begin? Here are a few DIY deep conditioner recipes you MUST try:

dig-deep-conditioner-inline

1. Avocado, Honey & Olive Oil –  mash 1-2 ripe avocados with 1-2 tsp of honey and 1 cup olive oil into a bowl and stir or use a blender as shown in this video

2. Coconut Oil, Honey & Egg  – combine 2 tbp. coconut oil and honey with one egg. Mix well and apply to clean hair, cover with plastic cap and leave on for at least 30 minutes.

3. Coconut Milk & Honey – combine 4 oz of coconut milk with two teaspoons of honey. Mix well and apply to clean hair, cover with plastic cap and leave on for at least 30 minutes.

Since heat provides an extra boost to your deep conditioning session, you can sit under your hood dryer, steamer, or wrap a warm towel around your head.

You always make sure you give yourself a little pampering, doesn’t your hair deserve the same??

Why #BYOB Matters…in Real Life and on TV

What made you come up with BYOB??

When I get asked this question I have to choose my word carefully when responding. I always want to say, “didn’t you have a time in your life when you felt “less than” because you were too short/too tall/ nose was to small/fingers too long??? BYOB is my clap back to everybody that ever made me feel “some type of way” about who I was/am as a person.

Art imitated life in an episode of “Being Mary Jane”, where MJ found herself stuck in the house, natural hair in all its awesome glory, scared to go to work because she’d taken her weave out and her hairstylist cancelled her appointment.

Screen Shot 2015-03-29 at 1.58.49 PM

I know what you’re thinking, Why didn’t she just go to work???

During the scene where Mary Jane is getting her hair done by her niece she has a moment of vulnerability and confides in her:

THIS IS WHY BYOB MATTERS.

BYOB is not a catch phrase, a slick remix of “bring your own ___”, it’s a state of mind, a self-awareness and acceptance that radiates from the inside.

It’s more than a message on a shirt, its a bold statement that external beauty standards do not apply – the unique “born this way” beauty we have is ALL that matters. God don’t make no junk…..

Nobody has the right to make you (or a TV character) feel like anything less than the beauty you are, and as long as your hair doesn’t interfere with you handling your business it should be all good.

BUT, that’s not the world we live in. We live in a world that will eat us alive if we allow it. A world that tells us that we’re less than if we don’t look a certain way. We have to make a conscious effort to fill our own cups; we have to know inside that we are enough.

Don’t buy into the BS that you need to add extras to your hair, face, body, whatever in order to be beautiful.

Be Your Own Beautiful.

Argan Oil for Oily Skin

“My skin is an oil slick….”

Raise your hand if you’ve said this before.

Let’s get to the root of why oily skin is oily in the first place:  to make up for a lack of moisture, the skin produce more sebum (oil), which often leads to acne (which leads to blemishes and scarring…).

Adding oil to the skin after cleansing and toning can lock in moisture and reduce the amount of oil produced by the skin (and less acne, blemishes and scarring).

WHY ARGAN OIL??

Argan oil is known for its high vitamin E content, which has antioxidant properties that promote cell turnover. BUT this also contains an ingredient called sterolins. Sterolins can promote healthy skin cell metabolism and help your skin retain more moisture.  This oil also contains unsaturated fatty acids that soften skin.

Just as we seal moisture in our hair with oil, sealing moisture in our skin has several amazing benefits, and if you’ve going to use oil on your face, argan oil is one of the best options out there.

Here’s to healthier, luminous, less oily skin!

Got Juice?? Your Next Juicer Recipe

Summer is almost here! (I know, those of you on the East Coast beg to differ..). Believe it or not, the time will be upon us where we’re sporting sandals and shorts sitting by the pool, SO now is a good time to start thinking about changing your eating habits for the better so you look your best.

I’ve been a juicer for about 5 years, I started out of convenience, and began to realize the positive changes in my body. Over the years I’ve experimented with a lot of different blends and I still add in a fruit or vegetable that might be on sale just to see what it tastes like.

If you’ve never done it or are curious about it, here’s a video where I added my new favorite vegetable, and it’s really good! Check out your next juicer recipe:

Here’s to a healthier, more beautiful you!!!

LipScrub

Make your own lip scrub with just 3 ingredients:

1 part honey (humectant & moisturizer)
1 part brown sugar (exfoliant)
1 part olive, jojoba, almond or coconut oil  (moisturizer)

Apply to lips and gently rub in. You could also allow to sit on your lips for a few minutes. Wipe off with damp cloth and rinse. Apply lip balm to seal in moisture, and get to kissing ;-).

If you don’t want to mix up a scrub, you can use a moistened toothbrush to gently exfoliate your lips. On your next visit to the dentist, pick up an extra one and thank us later 🙂

To Your Beauty!

Natural Hair || Have You Tried Layering your Hair Products??

We all know that in cooler/colder weather layering is the best method to: 1.) help you stay warm and 2.) give you options to prevent overheating. Too cold? Add a layer. Getting hot? Take something off.

When it comes to our clothing layering gives the flexibility you need to adjust our comfort level according to the environment. Too cold? Add a layer. Getting hot? Take something off.

What does that have to do with applying  hair products?

Generally speaking, your new growth (the hair closest to your scalp) is the healthiest, and your hair ages as it grows out. So that means that your ends are the oldest and driest part of your hair and need the most TLC.

Following this “rule”, you can bet that focusing on moisture with less protein for your new growth area is best, as you travel down your hair shaft, moisture AND protein are needed. Styling, hair rubbing on our clothes and the environment all contribute to the ends of our hair taking a beating. Rest assured that your moisture and protein will help keep your locks looks luscious.

Note: you don’t have to go to extremes to find the product that’s the perfect blend of moisture and protein for your ends, use what you already have! Use your regular moisture-based leave-in or daily conditioner and add a protein-based product for the ends of your hair.

Don’t know where to begin? Check out Mo’s current faves for product layering, no rinsing required!

Natural Hair || ReStyle Your Crochet Braids

Crochet braids are the HOT new look in the natural hair community, but as we mentioned in this blog post, it’s easy to be seduced by the gorgeous, luscious curls and we forget that this style requires maintenance.

Unless you have lots of time on your hands (enough to them them out and redo), the day will come when you’ll have to refresh those curls.

Here’s how to do it:

INHMD Comes to Southern Arizona!!!!!!

Yes indeed, it’s true…….

1

We are an approved host for International Natural Hair Meetup Day (INHMD)!!!!!!

INHMD is an annual one-day event, created with the purpose of allowing the opportunity for women across the country to meet in their own communities while networking, sharing and meeting (virtually) other women across the country participating in meetups on the same day.

For the FIRST TIME EVER, southern Arizona will have an INHMD event, and we want to make a splash! The red carpet will be rolled out (literally) for naturalistas in Sierra Vista, Douglas, Bisbee, Tucson, and all areas in between on Saturday May 30!

Connecting the community is what we do, stay tuned for more information about workshops, vendors, and other awesome details about this event!!
