The 5 Best Ways to Have Beautiful Skin Without Makeup

A healthy lifestyle and great skin-care habits produce glowing, youthful-looking skin. We’ve all heard the phrase, “You are what you eat”, right?

Have you been wondering how you can have beautiful skin without makeup? Keep reading….

* Maintain a balanced diet. Consuming too much refined food, such as sugar, can drain the body of essential vitamins and minerals. This, in turn, encourages wrinkles and premature aging. Eat foods that are rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids, such as fruits, vegetables and fish. Also, drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

* Exercise. Working out brings more oxygen to your skin cells, leaving you with skin that’s nourished and more firm. Exercise also helps reduce stress, which has been shown to aggravate skin conditions, such as acne and hives.

* Exfoliate. sloughing off dead skin cells reveals fresher, younger skin, allowing your serums and moisturizers to penetrate your skin effectively.

* Get some sleep. Okay, fine…if you don’t always get your 8 hours of shut eye every night, at least look like you did by reducing puffiness and swelling with cold therapy (see this post).

* Protect your skin from harsh rays. Exposure to the sun can cause premature aging and skin discoloration, increasing your risk of skin cancer.  Apply sunscreen daily and wear a brimmed hat whenever possible.

I’ve Got the Big Shirt Blues!

Hello all it’s me again!

I was put to the challenge a little while ago to select an item from a store and jazz it up as creatively as possible! Well, you know I rose to the occasion and jump at any opportunity to REcreate, REstyle, and REpurpose!
I perused through the store for a lucky model and a lucky piece to transform with only other items I could find in the same store.
I tried pants and top, NOPE!
I tried a skirt and a tank, NOPE!
I even settled for something simple, a dress…NOPE try again!

I was called to this little number here:
A whimsical oversized blue and white button up top with a belt to be tied around the waist.
Time was winding down so I snatched the model and got to work!

 – I told the model to put it on as if it were a regular old shirt. Leave the belt off (for now…evil grin)
  – I tried a few things and then settled on an aqua colored braided belt to cinch the waist since it was a few sizes to big on my model.
 – ROLL UP THOSE SLEEVES! The sleeves were a little above the elbow so I just took my time and rolled them up fold by fold until a lovely little cap sleeve was created! I adored the creation more and more!
 – What to do with the matching belt??? Glad you asked! I tied the belt around the neck to create an ever classic, very classy and chic pussycat bow.
 – ACCESORIZE! I grabbed a nautical clutch and a nice eye catching piece of costume jewelry and BAM!
Life was given!

See ladies! It doesn’t take much to get your wardrobe going! You just have to have a little patience and a little creativity to boot! Fashion doesn’t have to be costly, nor does it take much thought most times. All it takes is a little can do attitude and you TOO can take a drab piece in your closet and turn it into FAB in a matter of minutes!

Until next time America!

Natural Hair || What to do About Heat Damage

Two of the most frightening words in a naturalista’s dictionary: heat damage.

heat-tools

Natural hair is VERY sensitive to anything that affects its moisture content, and in order for heat tools to straighten the hair they have to evaporate the moisture from the hair….somebody needs to invent the Super Steam Moisturizing Straightener for natural hair. Click To Tweet

If you read our post about what you can do to avoid heat damage AFTER you’d already applied heat to your hair without the protective measures (and now you believe you have some damaged hair) you have two options:

OPTION 1

1. Do a protein treatment

2. Do a super-duper deep conditioning treatment

3. Get into a protective style to prevent further damage from styling and the environment (harsh weather)

4. Moisturize and seal regularly.

5. Leave the heat tools alone

OPTION 2

1. Cut off the damaged hair.

2. See steps 1-5 of Option 1.

FACT: Heat damaged hair cannot be repaired. The steps in option 1 allow you to prevent further damage until you have reached a level of comfort where you can cut off the damaged hair.

Option 2 just gets you there much faster, so you can start building a healthy hair care regimen sooner :-).

Disclaimer: This is NOT an anti-heat post. The key to applying heat to your hair is to be responsible. Not sure where to begin? Check out this post.

Natural Beauty|| Frozen Water Face Treatment

Frozen water??? Yeah, we mean ice.

When do you typically put ice on your body? When something is swollen, right? The same concept applies on your face, and we’re seeing beauty and skin care “appliances” coming out that deliver the cooling, deputing, lifting and firming effects of ice for the cost of a week’s worth of frappe-latte-cinos.

The cool thing is, all you need is water and your freezer and you’re in there!

When/how can you use ice (or your handheld ice roller) on your skin?

hansderma-ice-roller

  • after shaving to reduce redness
  • after getting sunburned to reduce discomfort and redness
  • reduce undereye puffiness
  • reduce swelling after a cosmetic procedure
  • tighten skin

Keep in mind that these effects are temporary, but if you’re not in the market for cosmetic surgery in the near future, this may be the option for you.

Do you already use cold therapy in your beauty regimen? Got one of those gel masks stashed in your fridge?

Natural Hair || Fight Pesky Single Strand Knots

Fairy knots or single strand knots, whatever you call them, they’re irritating and SUPER annoying…. and pretty much come with the textured hair territory (sigh).

single-strand-knots

Here’s the BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): there isn’t anything you can do to completely eliminate single strand knots, some hair just loves itself so much that it can’t resist wrapping itself around itself and forming a knot.

While they can’t be obliterated, you can fight pesky single strand knots. Here’s how:

– Go Heavy when Sealing. Using products like butters or heavy oils to seal the ends of your hair can help add an extra layer of smoothness that calms super curly hair so it doesn’t form a knot.

– Stretch. Stretched ends are less likely to wrap around themselves. Opt for rollers or the newly invented SSS plates to stretch hair without using heat.

– Get a Trim. Many naturalistas experience more single strand knots as their hair gets longer, meaning the ends are older and more likely to show wear and split. Trimming the scraggly ends of the hair will leave a smooth shaft that is less likely to knot. Click To Tweet

– Protective Styling. Reducing the amount of hair handling reduces the potential for knots to form, thus adopting a hands-off hair care regimen may be the way to go. Need some inspiration? Check out the 6-Month Protective Style Journey content for tips to maintain healthy hair while it’s tucked away.

Scrap Fabrics to the Rescue!

Hey Ladies!
So, as I was getting ready to go out last weekend I just couldn’t seem to find the perfect top or skirt or dress or ANYTHING for that matter! It was either too deep in the clean laundry pile or awaiting a day at the laundromat. Needless to say I was discouraged…UNTIL I remembered I had a bag of fabrics I paid a WHOLE $1 for a few weeks ago. Then it came to me! Just wear the scrap fabric duh!
Some good pop of color, funky fabric and an open mind will save your wardrobe every single time! I found the fabric I wanted to wear and found a little belt to secure it. Took it in the middle and draped over my neck like a tie. Used the belt to secure and scrunch the remaining fabric to create a faux peplum effect in the front! I settled for one of the accent colors of the fabric and remembered I had a skirt that would compliment the busyness of the material perfectly. For the shoes I knew I had to keep it really simple since the top was doing aaaalll of the work.
WAM! BAM! THANK YOU MA’AM and was out the door!
This look was all business in the front and PARTAY in the back! So the next time you get in a fizzle about what to wear, just look to your old scrap fabrics for some inspiration! I guarantee you will never look to rock a regular blouse the same way again!
Be sure to try this out for your 4th of July festivities this weekend and tag me so I can see your amazing looks! Remember ladies, always look to recreate, restyle, and repurpose your wardrobe to keep it fresh and fun!
Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
