2023 Affirmed for Me: Lessons from a Year of Shenanigans

As the last few days of 2023 sped by, I (like many people) reflected on the lessons I’d learned over the previous 360-something days. 2023 was a year of continued transition for me, more profound self-discovery, and relearning to navigate change with grace.
These lessons should be familiar to me since they align with my coaching framework, but I didn’t expect I would be challenged to go even deeper in my understanding of them last year…2023 was relentless, I touched on some of my experiences in this podcast episode.
I decided to share these insights here with the intention that they will support you on your journey of personal growth and self-confidence. I want to invite you to consider how my 2023 “affirmations” might resonate in your journey:

  1. Sometimes Discipline is Gentle

One of the most significant takeaways from 2023 has been the concept of “gentle discipline.” My formal introduction to discipline came during my years in the Army, which looked like pushing myself to the limit. 2023 taught me that discipline can also be gentle and nurturing. I learned to make choices that prioritized my well-being in every way. In 2023 discipline meant pausing. It looked like rest and listening to my need for deeper self-care. This season was a beautiful reminder that discipline doesn’t always mean doing more; sometimes, sometimes it can be doing less but with intention and self-compassion.

  1. Vulnerability is Power in Safe Spaces

2023 has reaffirmed the power of vulnerability in my personal growth journey. I’ve discovered that allowing myself to be vulnerable, both with myself and others, has led to deeper and more authentic connections. Vulnerability isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a courageous act of showing up as your true self. Through vulnerability, we build trust, both in ourselves and our relationships. I encourage you to explore moments of vulnerability in your own life to build self-confidence and foster genuine connections.

  1. Self-Compassion Turns Step Backs into Comebacks

Self-compassion has played a pivotal role in my 2023 journey. During challenging times, I learned the importance of treating myself with kindness and understanding. Self-compassion isn’t always easy, but it’s a powerful tool for building confidence and resilience. When we extend the same compassion to ourselves as we do to others, we create a solid foundation for navigating life’s ups and downs with self-trust.

  1. Grace-guided Change for the Win

Changes, both expected and unexpected marked 2023. What I’ve realized is that how we navigate change matters just as much as the change itself. Navigating change with grace means being adaptable, open to new experiences, and seeing transitions as opportunities for growth. It’s about embracing change as a natural part of our personal development journey. As we step into 2024, let’s remember that change can catalyze transformation.

I hope you’ll allow yourself to reflect on your experiences from this year and consider how these takeaways might resonate with your journey.
As we lean into 2024, I hope my takeaways can guide you in creating a year that reflects your authenticity and allows you to design your life as a masterpiece.
