What Makes Up Total Confidence?

What comes to mind when you think of confidence? What does it look like? Do you imagine a specific person? Confidence looks different on every person, and as women I believe that we’ve been sold a false narrative of what a confident woman is “supposed” to look like. In my experience as a Confidence Coach my job is to support clients to achieving what I refer to as total confidence in their lives. Confidence isn’t a personality trait; somebody being extroverted doesn’t automatically mean they’re confident, and being an introvert doesn’t mean a person doesn’t have confidence.

Having total confidence is always the goal; and the journey requires a level of self-awareness and clarity that creates a calmness during times of stress and allows you to explore new things without hesitation. Total Confidence is a state of mind where you have total positive trust in yourself, your abilities, and your power to create what you desire out of your life. We want to thrive in total confidence in our lives, but perhaps we don’t understand where it comes from. Take a look at the pieces of our lives to consider as we move in the direction of total confidence.

Self-Talk: Your words have the energy and power to heal, help, humiliate and harm; what you say to yourself creates your world. Your level of confidence is affected by your self-talk, the beliefs you hold and the words you say about and to yourself shapes the way you feel about yourself.

Mindset: Are you stuck where you are or do you believe you can you improve? This is the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset, and this is the ground that holds the seeds of your confidence.

Self-Reliance: Your ability to overcome the resistance that causes you to not take action. How do you handle the voices that tell you to stay small and not take the chance?

Courage: How you respond when fear comes knocking at your door.

Action: Being so in love with the possibilities that you overcome any feelings of fear, apathy or disinterest and you DO THE THING because you’re more enthusiastic about what’s in store for you than not.

Competence: Learning new things and getting better at something after taking action.

Self-Possession: Releasing the need for approval or validation from others. This post in the group about people-pleasing and the slippery slope between seeking validation and manipulating others was a conversation starter.

SelfExpression: Developing communications skills and improving interactions with others by establishing and honoring your boundaries and speaking your needs and desires.

Self-Care: Acknowledging, honoring and expressing your worth by intentionally caring for yourself

We tend to think of confidence as something you are or something you do. The truth is, it’s both. You can practice the tools you learn and as you do, you’ll become….

Confidence is a skill that can be developed, improved and strengthened, just like a muscle. You have the capacity to become stronger in your confidence, and if support is what you need to get to your total confidence, I‘m here to help.
